While based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, with the same transaxle layout and engine type, this prototype is an extreme track car.  Ferrari engineers have carried out extensive work on the engine's combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts.  These modifications, combined with the fact that the internal attrition has been reduced and the maximum revs have been boosted to 9,000 RPM, helped achieve the target output of 720 hp at 9,000 rpm.  Particular attention was also paid to cutting the wight of the engine unit components.

This was achieved both by optimizing forms - as in the new crankshaft - and adopting exclusive materials, as in carbon-fibre or the intake plenums.  A new gearbox shift strategy cuts overall gear-change times to 60 ms.
 
Except for the roof and winshield, not much of the 599XX is cannibalized from the 599 GTB.  All four fenders, or instance, feature F1-like aero "fences", vertical panesl behind which air is scooped out from each wheel well.  To relieve heat and pressure, the hood features nearly as many holes as Augusta.  The winglets on the C-pillars funnel air inward, orcing it to slide down the lexan rear window then alnong the ducktail trunklid and finally over the carbon-fibre blade spoiler increasing downforce dramatically.

The 6.0 ;oter V-12 makes 720 HP and 506 foot pounds of torque which is more than 108 hp more than the stock 599 GTB.   The power to weight ratio is an astonishing 4.7 lbs per horesepower which is what most definitely allowed it to se the new world record at Nurburgring.    The coolest part is that Ferrari warrantees this non-street legal car ffor 5000 km which should be plenty for 2 years or racing.  This is as comforting to the mind just as much as the Air conditioning is to the body (another wonderful creature comfort that is rare to the racing cockpit.  But what impressed this writer was how the car feels and sounds. It is nimble, responsive, exciting and LOUD!!! The sound is just incredible.
